ARTIST ANNA GAHLIN IN URUGUAY

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

artist anna ghalin wears Tallulah & hope kaftans in Uruguay

Anna Gahlin wears Classic Long kaftan and dress in Starlings Playa Verde, Uruguay.  Anna wears Hero silk kaftan eagle watching in Las Flores, Uruguay. Anna is a conceptual artist from Bath, her works above ‘Tanizaki series watercolours’ 2009, (pink painting) ‘How The Heart’  2010  oil on linen 60 x 60cm.  Anna talks to T&H.

T&H: Uruguay looks beautiful would you recommend Playa Verde for a holiday?
AG: Absolutely! and Punta del Este is nearby if you want shopping, restaurants, galleries and a bit of highlife.
T&H: Where is your favourite place to visit?
AG: The hammock in my sister’s garden in Las Flores takes some beating, and Colonia in the west of the country  is exquisite. I also love the old buildings in Montevideo.
T&H: Do your travels inspire your artwork?
AG: Since I am principally motivated by how we view colour and the effects of light and shadows, travel to the Southern Hemisphere is important to me to get new perspectives.
T&H: Where would like to travel to next!?
AG: I would love to see the Iguazu Falls on the Brazil/Argentine border.  And one day to  return to Venezuela (where I was born).

Earlier this year we posted an interview ‘Artists To Invest In’ from Net-a-Porter magazine with Anna’s son Adam Gahlin, a leading London art consultant.

CYNTHIA CONRAN WEARS TALLULAH & HOPE

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Cynthia Conran wears Tallulah & Hope kaftans and ponchos, luxury resort wear

Cynthia Conran wears Luxury Hooded Poncho, Circle Cape merino wool Poncho, Hero silk kaftan in Sandgrouse, Classic Short Kaftan in Starlings, silk slip with Classic Long kaftan in marine black.  Pictures taken in Cynthia’s home and Chaya Venice and Velet Margarita in Hollywood, Amercia. Final pictures Cynthia wears jacket by Jade Jagger, pink Cashmere wrap by Cynthia Conran for the The Collective Design and on holiday with father-in-law Sir Terence Conran.

Cynthia Conran has the upbeat energy and ‘can do’ attitude of someone who grew up in the sunshine state of California..   She spent her twenties living New York where she worked as a model and also ran a horse-riding school in Pasadena indulging her life-long passion for riding and horses. In her late twenties she moved to London for love and married restaurateur Tom Conran, they have three daughters.

Cynthia lives in Notting Hill and in 2010 launched The Collective Designs, a travelling boutique showcasing independent, inspiring fashion, beauty, interior and lifestyle brands.  The Collective events are edited and curated by Cynthia, they take place regularly throughout the year in friends and families homes.  The next Collective event will take place on 8th and 9th March in west London.

Cynthia also works with A.S.A.P a small charity that raises funds for African orphans who have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic.

T&H spent the morning with in Cynthia’s beautiful home where she told us about her work, favourite places to eat and drink, and modelled pieces from our launch collection.

T&H: Why did you decide to launch The Collective?
CN: I enjoy fashion and design and i often meet really interesting designers, i saw an opportunity for me to support small, independent brands by bringing them together and creating events where people can enjoy their work in an intimate, very relaxed way. The events are the antithesis of high-street shopping!  They are where you can experience brands that you might not know of; everyone who shows at part of the Collective are chosen because they are offer something unique and special.

T&H: Tell us about some of the brands who have shown at The Collective
CC: It’s a pretty eclectic mix! Beautiful jewellery from designers such as Sally Dudumesh, Istanbul based jeweller Verda Alaton, Brooke Gregson and Jade Jagger, ‘Cuir ‘Et Terre’ artisan leather goods from the Dordogne, organic beauty brands, ‘Exquises Caprines’ soaps sourced from France made from goats milk, ‘KH Textiles’ cashmere throws from Finland, ethical fashion brands, accessory brand Pinki that uses South African springbok skins, cashmere wraps which i design, luxury silk kaftans from Tallulah & Hope!, to ‘Bluglass and Muir’ who create art pieces from Medieval London artefacts.

T&H: What’s coming up for The Collective?
CC: The next event will be on the 8th and 9th March and will be hosted in the home of florist Nikki Tibbles who founded Wild At Heart.  We have a lovely mix of lifestyle brands alongside some therapists giving mini-treatments.

T&H: Your favorite West London places to eat and drink?
CC: I’m lucky to be part of a restaurant family so i have lots of places to choose from. Coming from California i love good Mexican food and well-made margarita’s. We called Crazy Homies (Tom Conran’s Mexican restaurant) after an LA street gang ‘vatos locos’ it’s where i go to drink margarita’s with girlfriends, eat Mexican and a enjoy music.   I also love visiting my brother-in-law’s Mexican El Camino on Portobello Road (there is also a branch in Soho).   My favourite dish at The Cow is the fish stew and i can’t resist the chocolate, raspberries brownies with white chocolate chips at Tom’s Cafe.

T&H: When you venture outside West London?
CC: I love Scotts and Le Caprice for the glamour and buzz they’re great classic London restaurants.  I love the Japanese food at Roka.  The bar at The Boundary (Sir Terence Conran’s hotel/cafe/restaurant)  in Shoreditch makes beautiful cocktails and the food is fantastic.

SUMMER LITCHFIELD’S POSITANO

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Summer Litchfield wears Tallulah & Hope kaftans in Positano and shares her favourite pieces

One of T&H’s favourite journalists Summer Litchfield, former Features Associate at Tatler and Arts Editor at Esquire and now freelance, shares her favourite places to visit in Positano and Italy’s Amalfi coast.

Summer Litchfield’s Positano
I’ve been going to Positano with my husband Nicolas for the last four years as his great aunt Vivina (who, well into her eighties, is my fashion icon) has lived there since the Sixties and we’re lucky enough to be able to stay with her. It’s a completely magical place; a sort of fairy grotto by the sea that suddenly appears as you turn a corner on the famously bendy road along the Amalfi coast.

The place feels wonderfully stuck in the Fifties and always brings to mind images of Jackie Onassis and Sophia Loren winding through the narrow streets. There are a lot of steps in Positano so heels are tricky and this year I lived in my tan, studded Gap sandals.

During the day we go to our favourite beach, Spiagga di Laurito. It’s tiny and pebbly and you have to get there by boat but it’s full of characters and has a little restaurant, Da Adolfo, which serves the most delicious food – I dream about the spaghetti vongole and mozzarella grilled on lemon leaves when I’m not there. I usually wear simple, cotton cover-ups so I think I caused a bit of a stir this year arriving in my Hero Tallulah & Hope kaftan, accessorised with a vintage Dior necklace which (apparently) used to belong to Marianne Faithful.

You can buy great hats really cheaply on the Amalfi coast, for around 10 euros, so you don’t feel too guilty leaving them behind at the end of your holiday. This year I found a pretty blush pink one that I liked too much to leave.

It’s always fun to pop across to Capri or drive to Ravello or Amalfi for the day and my Classic Short kaftan in Starlings navy/pink worn with my skinny white ‘Norma’ Lee jeans was perfect for taking me through from a day’s window shopping and cafe lounging to dinner at our favourite restaurant in Positano La Cambusa, which does the best fresh fish carpaccios and seabass ‘aqua pazza’.

The terrace at Le Sirenuse, Positano’s swankiest hotel, is a lovely spot for pre-dinner Camparis or a post-dinner grappa as it has the most amazing views; all twinkling lights and the moon’s reflection shimmering across the sea.

John Steinbeck was right when he described Positano as ‘a dream place that bites deep’ and I’m already counting the months until we return.

Summer’s Holiday Style Essentials
Bikinis – You can’t beat Top Shop and I love French brands like Eberjey which is stocked in one of my favourite local boutiques, Iris.
Shades – I live in my trusty Rayban Aviators but also have a pair of neon pink and transparent, oversized Matthew Williamson shades I love.
Jewellery – I’m a minimal girl at heart but have become quite smitten with two wooden and silver beaded bracelets that my father-in-law bought me from a shop called Ilaria in Peru.
Bags – Canvas tote bags all the way for summer hols. I have a supersized navy and white one for the beach and a little red leather trimmed one from Pickett that’s ideal for day-tripping

KATE AND GEORGIE SPICER

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

We didnt have long with the Spicer sisters…Kate Spicer, leading lifestyle journalist, contributing features writer for Sunday Times Style, food critic, extreme sport lover and one of the sassiest ladies T&H have ever met; and her sister Georgina Spicer beauty pr and make-up artist (whose regular clients include Sam Taylor-Wood).

Kate had just got back from cultural jaunt to Istanbul via a wedding in Ibiza and was on her way to lunch at Quo Vadis and Georgie was off to a picnic…so we immersed ourselves in Spicer world while we could.  What a rivet these ladies were! Brown (from hols), Kate has a great 20′s bob which gave everything she tried on the instant appeal of an Arnold Genthe portrait.

Kate wears Chiton kaftan in Africa with vintage Terry De Havilland wedges, brown leather bag from boutique Dos Lunas Ibzia with vintage Ascher scarf in burnt orange, Hero kaftan in Starlings navy/pink and Pareo in Big Bird Orange.  Georgie wears, Classic Short kaftan in Starlings navy/pink and Chiton in marine black worn with black vintage Terry De Havilland Wedges.

T&H: Most memorable holiday food
KS:  The fresh fish sandwiches from Eminonu (a major hub and ferry port in Instanbul). The fish, which comes straight off the boats, is  charcoal grilled and served with bread, onion and lemon so simple and so delicious!
GS: Grilled fish, vegetables and rice eaten on the beach in Goa.

T&H: …and to drink?
KS: Rose
GS: Lassi (preferably drunk on a beach in India)

T&H: Georgie,  favourite holiday beauty tips?:
GS: The So Spa at the Sofitel Hotel in St James does some lovely treatments, try one by Cinq Mondes.  I also love the Pâte de Fleurs Cleanser by Cinq Mondes and I always use Caudalie Beauty Elixir for an instant burst of radiance to the complexion. Oh and Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation is the best i ever used, it’s oil free and super light!

T&H: Favourite piece from the collection
KS: The Chiton kaftan in Africa i love the bold deep red / beige print and its versatility of wear.  I really like the super-size pareo in the orange bird print too, i love orange it’s one of my favourite colours.
GS: The Classic Short kaftan in Starlings navy/pink, its gorgeous and navy is such a classic colour.

T&H: Kate we’re very much admiring your gorgeous leather bag, where’s it from?
I bought the bag (365 euros) from Boutique Dos Lunas housed in the restaurant Las Dos Dunas, San Rafel, Ibizia.  I love it, the  leather has worn really well.

T&H: Georgie we’re loving your sunglasses, where are they from?
GS: Roberto Cavalli

JULIET KINSMAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF MR & MRS SMITH

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Juliet Kinsman Editor-in-Chief Mr & Mrs Smith wears Tallulah & Hope kaftan

Juliet Kinsman, Editor-in-Chief of Mr & Mrs Smith boutique travel specialists, and Kensal Green resident talks to T&H and shares some great travel tips. (Her blog for her West London neighbourhood Park-Life.org celebrates people and places in Queens Park, Kensal Green and the surrounding area – it’s a must for local info).  Juliet wears Classic Long kaftan in teal over black silk Slip.

Juliet has the kind of energy you would expect from a woman with a global schedule. Her quest to deliver style, service and original hotel experiences for the discerning traveller takes her all over the world, most recently New York, Mykonos, South of France, Berlin, Thailand and Italy.
“I love my job,” she enthuses, “It’s a complete privilege to travel to so many exciting places and meet such interesting people.”  Juliet regularly shares her travel and interior design thoughts in The Observer through to The Sunday Times Style magazine and The New York Times.

T&H: Where have you been recently that you recommend?
JK: Mykonos actually, where I stayed in an amazing luxury villa called Villa Orpheus (see picture above)– it was like taking over your very own boutique hotel – and it’s owned by the loveliest couple. I also visited Puglia in Southern Italy, where I saw some great masserias and trulli (see pictures above) – such a beautiful part of the world. We also headed to the less well-known region of Basilicata and stayed in Le Grotte della Civita (see pictures above) in Matera. Originally cave dwellings in the ancient rock, it’s now an extraordinary luxury hideaway thanks to 10 years of painstaking restoration. Every detail of the low-key-luxury furnishings is antique – it’s an incredible experience, and it would be a great place for a romantic autumn weekend away.

T&H: What about the ol’ ‘staycation’?
JK: Colourful and a bit kooky, Cliff Barns is definitely somewhere unique!
T&H: Does it look like Southfork?
JK: Ha ha, no it’s a kitsch private house in Norfolk purpose built for fun times for all the family or a big group of friends.

T&H: Top tip for finding flights?
JK: Skyscanner, everytime! It tells you most flights available for connections all over the world. Or if you have an iPhone, great apps are Next Flight (£1.79) which details all upcoming departures. And then keep track of all your transits with Flight Status (£1.79).

T&H: Favourite travel blogs?
Our Mr & Mrs Smith blog is great for insider hotel advice and inspiring tip-offs from our travels and I also love The New York Times’ T magazine’s travel blog which I also contribute to.

T&H are particularly enjoying your new hotel guidebook from Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection France
Thank you so much! I can just envisage some gorgeous holidaymakers sporting your kaftans by the pool at one of the Côte d’Azur properties, or popping on their poncho while on a glam city break in Paris.

SADIE WEARS HERO KAFTAN, GREECE

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Sadie, UK PR Director of Ralph Lauren, wears Hero kaftan in Liberty umbel print

Sadie Mantovani is the UK PR Director for Ralph Lauren and knows a thing or two about luxury fashion.  She shared some of her recent holiday pictures, travel and holiday beauty tips with T&H.  Sadie wears Hero silk kaftan in Umbel blue/grey.

T&H: where did you holiday this summer?
Sadie: I went to two beautiful Greek islands, Kephalonia (see pic above of beautiful Myrtos Beach) and Spetses. The weekend before, I was in Marbella.
T&H: loving the gold shoes you’re wearing in the above pic with your Hero kaftan, where from?
Sadie: Louboutin.
T&H: Favourite piece from T&H?
Sadie: the Hero kaftan in Umbel, i love you the way you can throw it over a bikini for day and then wear it over a slip tied with a scrunchie for evening and it packs to nothing!
T&H: would you recommend any particular hotel from this trip?
Sadie: Both places I stayed were wonderful – the  Emelisse in Kephalonia and the Poseidonion Grace in Spetses (pics above of pool and hotel front in Spetses).   There are no cars allowed on Spetses which makes it particularly lovely.
T&H: your favourite holiday beauty tips / products?
Sadie: My Flutter permanent eyelash extensions which mean I don’t have to wear any mascara and which miraculously stay on despite suncreams, sweat and splashing! This year I discovered a new holiday must-have, Total Treatment Facial Mask by Yes To Tomatoes.  It’s really quick and takes any redness after spending too much time in the sun. I also started using Apot Care products before going away and during my holiday, and found a real improvement in the smoothness of my skin, and the products seem to have maintained the radiance and even skin tone post-holiday.

T&H: your favourite holiday destination so far?
Sadie: Has to be Peru where I went for my honeymoon, and the best hotel I have stayed in is Las Ventanas in Cabo, Mexico. We were so well looked after with our own butler, massages on your balcony etc…heaven.
T&H: your favourite holiday read?
Sadie: This holiday I read ‘The Lacuna’ by Barbara Kingsolver, ‘The Long Song’ by Andrea Levy, ‘The Rose of Sebastopol’ by Katharine McMahon, and the Greek translation of Victoria Hislop’s ‘The Return’, as I am getting back into reading in another language. Great holiday reads are anything by Isabel Allende or John Irving.

TAZELAAR STEVENSON IN ARTIST PRINT PAREO

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Taz wearing artist print pareo

Tazelaar Stevenson was born in 1978 and now lives and works in Norwich.  He has been screen-printing since he was 16 and went on to study Printmaking at Norwich School of Art and Design when he was in his early 20′s.  As well as producing his own work he currently prints for uber-cool fashion maverick NOKI (N.H.S. London) and has just produced some t-shirts for Whiteline’s 2010 collection.  His love of nature and the British coast line combined with his understanding of 70′s culture and style made him the perfect choice for our first artist scarf.

T&H:  We love the artist print you created for Tallulah & Hope’s first collection!  Talk us through your ideas and inspiration..
TS:    I love the work of 70′s artists Sol Lewit and Agnes Martin. The lines that create the border of the pareo are part of an ongoing obsession I have with straight lines, grids and points of intersection.  Although it looks very formal it is actually about the rhythm of nature and constructing chaos.  And I love birds! I was so happy to see them as a theme in your print design!  The cloud-like daubs that appear in the middle of the scarf are actually abstracted avocet wings.

T&H: Where is your favourite place to relax?
TS: Burnham Overy Staithe and Gun Hill, North Norfolk coast.  For the light, the air and the birds! (feathered obviously).

T&H: What’s in your packed lunch box?
TS: [snigger] Pear, chicory and sheep cheese salad.  I used to make it at the Real eating Company in Brighton where I worked with the brilliant Cass Titcombe.

T&H: And what are you listening to..
TS: Currently Grievous Angel featuring Rubi Dan or anything Night Slugs, but never while I’m on the beach.  Nothing beats the sound of the waves.

T&H: Thanks again Taz for bringing your unique wit and style to Tallulah & Hope.
