So we are now starting to think about beautiful, classic swimwear pieces to work with our luxury silk kaftans, cover-ups, cotton pareos and beachwear line. We love taking inspiration from vintage pictures like this one.

VINTAGE SWIMWEAR
Friday, May 11th, 2012Celia Birtwell by Dominic Lutyens
Tuesday, October 18th, 2011Celia Birtwell has been designing glorious iconic prints since the 60′s; she is someone whose work we find endless inspiring so when we heard about this new book celebrating her work by leading style journalist Dominic Lutyens we got rather excited! The book (published by Quadrille) is beautifully and lovingly put together, it includes stunning illustrations and pictures covering Celia’s life in design, her prints, relationship and fashion collaborations with Ossie Clarke, friendship with David Hockney and lots of intimate photographs from her fascinating life and travels. For anyone interested in great style this book is a must. Pictures from the top, David Hockney and Celia Birtwell at his flat in Powis Terrace, Notting Hill, 1969, photographed by Hockney’s former boyfriend Peter Schlesinger, Model Gala Mitchell photographed by Celia in Linden Gardens in a 40′s inspired, halter-neck, chiffon frock, Gala Mitchel in 1969 shot again by Celia in a dress combining her prints Golden Slumbers and Michaelmas Daisy. Gala was posing in the Kingston Garden of Sheila Oldham, former wife of Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones manager. Back in July 2010 we also blogged about the book 70′s Style & Design, written by Dominic Lutyens and Kirsty Hislop.
SANDGATE BEACH KENT
Wednesday, October 5th, 2011The beautiful English coast Sandgate beach in Kent also a good spot for sea fishing, this picture was taken last week during the mini heat wave. The British coast and countryside is an endless source of design inspiration for Tallulah & Hope. Our kaftan signature prints Starlings and Sandgrouse and colour palette for our first collections (navy, sea blue, teal, pink) was very inspired by the British countryside.
IRIS APFEL – STYLE DOYENNE AND FAHSION’S LATEST MUSE
Monday, August 23rd, 2010T&H have long admired spectacular style doyenne Iris Apfel (fourth from left in the above picture) Iris wears a tunic made by one of China’s ethnic minorities, a clanging necklace from a Tunisian souk and her signature humongous spectacles. She calls herself a ‘geriatric starlet’ but she’s fashion’s latest muse, inspiring everyone from designers to glossy magazine editors. The photograph above was recently taken at a “nutty-dressers” luncheon for the New York Times.
Watch this wonderful footage of Iris styling the window of a US department store and discussing her approach to style and tips on accessories.

“Our intention was to distill the relaxed glamour of the seventies and create a sleek, grown-up capsule collection of real elegance – a stylish solution that contemporary beachwear was much in need of.” Tallulah & Hope
Why the 70′s? Every summer T&H dust off their ankle tie wedge espadrilles, faded jeans and a selection of gently embellished soft cotton shirts; the navy culottes come out, vintage sunglasses, leather sandals, the urge to smoke too many roll-ups and of course a kaftan or two! Summer style for us is all about an effortless dressing and wearable-chic that so embodies this decade and the kaftan epitomises this mood in one beautiful, comfortable, hard-working garment. Hilary Alexander writes, “The kaftan is a shape that fits all. You can wear it as a mini and not feel naked, you can wear it with jeans, or you can wear it long – and it’s so easy to accessorise. It’s also one of the only items of clothing that is not age related“.
We have taken the best elements of this summer classic, refined, simplified and modernised this fabulous garment and hopefully placed it firmly back in the summer wardrobe of contemporary, beautifully dressed women.

70′s PHOTOGRAPHY BY SLIM AARONS
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010
Slim Aarons is a brilliant photographer but the real excitment for Tallulah & Hope was never his prowess behind the lense (although clearly deeply talented) is was his choice of subject matter. His master stroke was devoting a lifetime to taking pictures of the rich and famous on holiday…genius! Exquisite locations, beautiful people, yachts, villas, sunshine, glamour (tons of it) and endless uninhibited fun. T & H jumped at the opportunity of having two of his photographs enlarged and printed onto enormous backdrops for our campaign story. It was the perfect way to create the right mood and setting for our luxury kaftans.
‘Poolside Gossip’ and ‘Desert House Party’ were both shot in 1970 at a desert house in Palm Springs designed by Richard Neutra for Edgar Kaufman. This incredible piece of contemporary architecture is widely regarded as a design classic. “His work is at once just so beautiful, and lush, and glamorous, and real, and even folksy ” writes David Patrick Columbia (for NewYorkSocialDiary.com 2006). Honestly, just spend 5 minutes looking at his photos… its nearly as good as a weeks holiday!
COLLECTION INSPIRATION
Thursday, December 10th, 2009
In any creative process there are pivotal moments that enlighten, thrill and inspire. Standing on the prom at Colwyn bay watching the starlings swoop and swarm over the crumbling pier, T&H fully realised their challenge. To create a luxury beachwear collection that looks and feels as beautiful as what they could see happening before them. Those masterful birds swayed and pulsed…at times solid then dissolving like exhaled smoke. We couldn’t tear ourselves away. The sea turned from teal to a marine black. The wet sand glistened as the tide slowly retreated, studded with the shadows of foraging coastal birds.
Thanks, we thought. You have been most helpful!
Starlings over Colwyn Bay Pier
The beautiful British coast and countryside continued to inspire our exclusive Starling and Sandgrouse prints and unique colourways. Two blissful weeks at Devon’s house under Vixen Tor sharing the garden with wild rabbits and a fearless minx; frolicking in the rapid streams that crash around moss covered rocks. The paradoxical delights of dungeoness and the awesome skies at camber sands have all been unforgettable experiences that have shaped and coloured our kaftans, ponchos and pareos.
